German and French Guianese students have teamed up to reflect upon cultural differences and their impact on business relationships.
This project has enabled students from North-Rhine-Westphalia and French Guiana to work together.
The aim of this project is also to bring distant territories closer and to develop the intercultural skills of our students.

This article is all about hightlighting the productions of German and French-Guianese students !

First, students introduced themselves.

Tamara introduces herself

My name is Solega Tamara and I am from French Guiana. I am a student in international commerce. I come from a big family : I have two sisters and six older brothers. I speak two languages : French (the official language in French Guiana) and Djuka, a local language, which is my mother tongue.

My parents are originally from Suriname, a country located just next to Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni. We often go there by pirogue, which is an important part of my culture and daily life.

I am passionate about beautiful football. I love teams that play with style, creativity, and teamwork. That is why I support FC Barcelona, a club known for its attractive and technical way of playing football.

Then each student designed their own logos about the project using whatever tool or software they deemed the most appropriate.

After designing the logo came the most important part of the project. Students reflected about their own culture.

Tamara’s personal analysis of her culture
My culture is a mix of traditions, food, language, and values.
In my culture you must respect the elders : that is a kind of wisdom.
The most important aspects of my identity are my background and my family.
At home I speak Djuka ( a local language spoken in the west of French Guiana and also in Suriname ) and with my friends I usually speak French.
I also speak a little bit Dutch which is the official language in Suriname.
My favorite food is pork ribs with rice and red beans because it tastes good and reminds me of home.
My favorite music is gospel, I enjoy the lyrics and makes me feel at peace.
I come from a big family ( I have six brothers and two sisters ) and that is wonderful because if you have a problem you will always find someone to help you or talk to if you feel depressed.
In my culture family and respect are very important, and we like spending time together and celebrating traditions like when a man comes to ask our parents for our hand for a marriage he must bring some gifts.

Students presented an aspect of their own culture in a slideshow.

Lorik’s slideshow (really impressive !)
It is a very clear detailed and informative presentation about Germany !

At the end of the project, students reflected upon the experience.
Most students have been happy to take part in this project and have enjoyed the cultural exchange.

Anna’s impressions about the project (Anna is a German student)

Hi everyone,

The project was enjoyable and informative. I liked that we could get to know another country and its culture, and I would gladly do it again.

It was a nice experience, I would have liked if it would last longer.

Kind regards,

To conclude, this project has been a good opportunity for students to practice their English and to get to know another country and culture ! We hope that this project will move forward in the years to come ! Thank you to all the students and also to my German colleague, Mrs Bausch !

Hi everyone,

The project was enjoyable and informative. I liked that we could get to know another country and its culture, and I would gladly do it again.

It was a nice experience, I would have liked if it would last longer.

Kind regards,
